AbstractThe seasonal leaf phenology of tropical forests has recently attracted the attention of researchers. This has been shown to be an excellent indicator of the effects of climate change, including the global warming trend. Unlike temperate forests, leaf phenology studies from fixed towers are just beginning in tropical forests. Cameras with bands only in the visible spectrum are best able to monitor subtle changes in leaf cover by detecting the amount of exposed woody branches in each image. This study tests five different combinations of original and transformed bands, and uses Object-Oriented Analysis to obtain the best classification. The objective was to measure the area occupied by illuminated branches in a single image of Central Amazon forest canopy, obtained near local noon under diffuse solar illumination (cloudy sky). Bands were extracted from the image using Spring version 5.1.5 software. Region-growing segmentation and a supervised classification using the decision tree algorithm release C4.5, were performed in the software Terraview 4.0.0 and the GeoDMA plugin, respectively. The best accuracy in a confusion matrix was obtained with a single transformed band -- the second principle component of the three visible bands -- to which we applied a 2% linear saturation prior to segmentation and classification.
